Customers used to google search words and click links. Today's customers ask whole questions to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. They get a ready-made answer. Whoever isn't in it doesn't exist for that customer.
How customers used to search
In the past, customers entered individual words into Google. For example "bakery Cologne" or "window cleaning near me". Google then showed a list of blue links. The customer picked a provider.
That was the standard for years. Whoever was on page 1 of Google got customers. Whoever wasn't stayed invisible.
How customers search today
Today it works differently. Customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude whole sentences. They write, for example: "Which company in my city can do X?" Or: "Who offers affordable Y for small businesses?"
The AI doesn't answer with a list. It delivers a ready-made answer. It may name one or two companies. It briefly explains why it recommends them.
If your company isn't in there, the customer doesn't see you. They don't keep searching either. They take what the AI tells them.
The customer gets a recommendation. Not a choice.
Why this is happening right now
Google itself rebuilt its search. In Germany, there's been the AI mode since October 2025. It shows an AI answer right at the top. The classic links come below it.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude are also getting better and better. For many questions they give a clear recommendation immediately. More and more people ask there directly, without the detour via Google.
What this means for your website
Your website must be built so AI systems understand it. It must be able to clearly say who you are, what you do and where you're based.
If the AI can't find these answers, it can't recommend you. It then either invents something wrong. Or it names a competitor.
What you can do now
Check what AI systems say about your company today. Ask ChatGPT about your company. Ask Gemini about your offering in your city.
Watch three things:
- Is your name named correctly.
- Are the facts about location and service correct.
- Are you recommended at all.
If not, you have a job to do. But also an opportunity. Most companies don't have this on their radar yet. Whoever starts now is early.
What this means for your business
Your customers today expect answers, not lists of links. Whoever doesn't appear in these answers loses customers without noticing. The free quick test shows you how well your website is set up for AI systems.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to completely rebuild my website?
No. Usually a few clear text blocks and a small technical info file for AI systems are enough. The rest of your website stays as it is.
Is Google dead now?
No. Google is still the largest search engine. But clicks on classic links go down as soon as an AI answer is at the top.
How quickly do I have to react?
The earlier the better. The AI systems are now learning which companies they recommend. Whoever becomes visible today stays visible for longer.
Who measured the drop in clicks?
Ahrefs, SISTRIX and the Pew Research Center independently measured similar results. Classic click rates fall as soon as an AI answer appears.
